Lacuna Beach is a blog / resource on art created within the African diaspora as well as outside of it, from black perspectives. Focus on interviews and conversations.
"We are Lacuna Beach. Welcome.
Generally speaking, lacuna means a blank space or a missing part; a gap.
We decided to call this venture Lacuna Beach for several reasons. We perceive a lacuna in digital media where black art is concerned. Furthermore, there is definitely much to be desired in the digital media coverage of art, in general, from black perspectives. Lastly, we use the plural of perspective because there is never a single, definitive ‘black’ perspective--these can be informed by age, religion, geographical origin, cultural affiliation, gender, profession, education, and any number of other variables, including previous familiarity with and access to art.
We will contribute to making up these shortfalls with a relaxed yet intellectual approach because… Life’s a beach.
Specifically, we will bring you weekly interviews with emerging and established artists. We will also interview curators, collectors, conservators, gallerists, dealers, critics, academics and others who work with(in) art. Topic-wise, we will focus on visual art, broadly defined: paintings, installations, sculpture, photography, film, video art, and performance art. Occasionally, we will touch upon other art forms where visual aesthetics play a major role, such as theater and dance.
One of our objectives is to render art more accessible to all that are interested. We also would like to provide a platform to engage and appreciate different perspectives on what would seemingly be the same image, as a microcosm for who we are as people having to bear the burden of a monolith."
